PEFC gains government approval
On the 18th December the results of the 2006 CPET (Central Point of Expertise on Timber) review were finally announced. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed that PEFC sustainable forest management certification provided an assurance that its certified timber-based products, originate from legal and sustainable sources. The UK government has signalled its preference for certified timber products in its own timber procurement policy and recommends consumers to make the same responsible choice.
Since PEFC’s initial rating as legal and sustainable by the UK government in August 2005, the PEFC global certified forest area has increased by another 70 million hectares and is heading towards the 200 million hectares milestone. The number of chain of custody certificates has more than tripled and currently more than three hundred UK paper and timber companies have opted for PEFC chain of custody certification for their businesses. The next CPET review will take place in 2008.
