Food hygiene

  • Wood is the first choice in packaging material for use in the food transportation, storage, handling and distribution
  • Properly manufactured pallets and cases, employing best practice, good handling and proper sanitation methods, make wooden packaging suitable for most applications in the food industry
  • Use only clean, dry pallets, moisture below 20%. At this level and lower moulds, fungi and bacteria encounter a negative living environment
  • Use heat treated packaging or microwaved process packaging
  • The use of high temperature treatments for sanitation is efficient, with no bacterial growth afterwards
  • Store wooden packaging indoors or protect it to avoid biological, chemical and physical contamination
  • Keep pallets and packaging separated for hygienic reasons
  • Use designated space for wooden packaging storage and for their mechanical loading/off-loading equipment
  • Wood-Food is a pan-European resource website designed to provide information about use of wood when in contact with, or transporting food.
